13. HISTORY |
Built for the Glasgow tobacco magnate Robert French, and launched as Albyn in 1934, Lloyds register of 1936 shows him to be a member not only of the Royal Clyde Yacht Club, but also Commodore of both the Royal Cruising Club and the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club of Cowes. |
She raced successfully both on the Clyde and at Cowes, where she was when war broke out in 1939. |
|
Albyn, later Gialese, then Galashiel, and now Eileen II, is part of the illustrious line of sturdy cruiser/racers from the pen of Alfred Mylne, and built by the Scottish shipbuilding firm of Alexander Stephen & Sons. The quality and method of construction of teak planks on steel frames is unsurpassed for strength and rigidity. Her massive steel scantlings, superb 2 ¼ “ Burma teak planks fastened to the frames with bronze bolts is an early form of composite construction, and one which has withstood the test of time. |
|
14. COMMENTS |
After a major re-build in 1986, the then Galashiel received the award for the best interpreter of tradition at the Imperia Classic Yacht Rally, thanks largely to her original interior and deck details. |
|
|
Since 1993, under present ownership, Eileen II has been commercially registered under the Norwegian flag, and as such has had yearly surveys to keep her in class, always being inspected by the same surveyor, Jul-Nielsen Trebãtservice. The last full survey was in June 2014, and the last equipment checks in May 2017. |
Over the period of 2013-2015 a huge amount of good work was carried out on Eileen II, including but not limited to: |
|
· New laminated stem fitted. |
· All bronze fasteners and bolts through steel frames replaced where deemed necessary. |
· All frames treated with anti-corrosion material. |
· Three keel bolts replaced. |
· All diesel and water tanks removed, cleaned, treated and painted with anti-corrosion material. |
· All plumbing and water hoses replaced where necessary. |
· New central heating system installed, driven by inverter, so independent of exterior power source. |
· Engine removed and fully overhauled. |
· New lithium Ion battery bank installed. |
· New 150A alternator and 24V Mastervolt chargers installed. |
· New flame retardant insulation and decking fitted in engine room. |
· Rudder pintles and sleeves renewed. |
· All deck and through hull fittings have been replaced in bronze. |
· All sails overhauled and serviced. |
· Most of the B&G and other electronics renewed. |
· New Washing machine. |
· Most of the deck caulking replaced. |
· New bilge pumps installed. |
· New toilets with electric flushing to new septic tanks installed. |
· New davits for life raft on aft deck. |
|
Eileen II is now good for another several generations of happy owners, to carry on the glorious tradition which she has kept going all these years. |
